A Turtle Dove Mosaic

This post was sent in to us by Wendy, who has made a wonderful mosaic of two Turtle Doves to celebrate her and her husband’s 50th wedding anniversary…

Turtle doves have long been associated with symbols of true love and so seemed an appropriate choice for creating a mosaic to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary.

Working with mosaic is challenging and absorbing and I first became involved in the art at West Dean College, Chichester under the guidance of international artist and mosaic expert, Emma Biggs, who is also senior tutor on Mosaic at the college.

In my design I had to interpret the colours and patterns of the doves whilst maintaining traditional techniques, which involved careful cutting of the feather-like shapes in glass tesserae and using opaque glass smalti to achieve the subtle tones.

I am a profound believer in the importance of life-long learning, and through courses at the College have also made a bond with many friends around the world.
